VOTED 2011 BEST JAZZ FESTIVAL IN AMERICA

So how'd we get this newest acclimation for this the Oldest Smooth Jazz Festival in the World...since 1987....the Grand Daddy of 'em All.....our 25th?

WELL...........................................................

We are ON AN ISLAND....26 MILES off the Southern California Coastline.

In an incredible building right at Ocean's Edge, a 7th wonder of the world which William Wrigley, the chewing gum magnate named The Casino when he opened his Grandeur to the Hollywoodites in 1929.....at the very top of The Casino, 6 Ramps Up (or elevator) in the Avalon Ballroom ... looking out to sea.

During performances one simply wanders out of the ballroom through French Doors onto a covered outside Verandah that circles the ballroom, overlooking Avalon Harbor, the Pacific Ocean and Descanso Beach.   Looking out across the Ocean while behind you still Hearing and Seeing the Stars of Smooth Jazz on the JazzTrax Live Performance Stage for 3 Consecutive Weekends within a stunning OLD Ballroom that simply....takes you Back in Time.

We are in a Monte Carlo "feeling" tiny seaport village where fresh fish caught that day off the Island might be what you're getting served in a whole line of the best tasting restaurants imaginable.   Easy to guess isn't it .... Food Simply Tastes Better......On an Island....in a seaport village tuned in October to Smooth Jazz.  Where the Stars of Smooth Jazz have literally taken control....of it all.   SEE YOUR JAZZTRAX FESTIVAL RESTAURANT CHOICES IN AVALON HERE.

Again.....how'd we get named Best Jazz Festival in America?

WELL......................

You do arrive a bit differently than to other jazz festivals.   By Boat.   After a magical 1 hour crossing on board Catalina Express.   The stomach stirring excitement of shuttling from where your flight into L.A. Lands, or driving yourself to the Ports of Call for Departure to our Magical Isle.  Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point, Newport Beach.  Especially that VERY FIRST TIME ARRIVING ON THE ISLAND when THE CASINO SUDDENLY LOOMS outa nowhere.  What is that giant magestic grandiose building with 6 story tall  pillars all around, doing sitting inches from an ocean in a tiny seaport village .....on an Island?  Built by William Wrigley in 1929 for the Music of the Big Bands of the 30's, 40's and 50's, now Smooth Jazz has reigned equally as long as it's modern day musical signature stamp.

Most of all, OF COURSE, it's the 30 different Stars of Smooth Jazz who for 25 years have turned Octobers on Catalina Island into the Center of the Smooth Jazz Universe.  Name 1.  They've played here.  Name another.  Them too.  The artists look to see if Catalina Island comes up on their tour schedule, with glee.

Never mind the big headliners like CANDY DULFER, MINDI ABAIR, RICK BRAUN, NORMAN BROWN, ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY, THE RIPPINGTONS, SPYRO GYRA

AND ON & ON & ON & ON.....

Look at this....WILLIE AND LOBO  just gotten back together are comin'.

UNCLE FESTIVE  First band ever to step onto our stage our initial year in 1987 and disbanded now for 20 years are coming back together just to celebrate our 25th annual, and again, they'll be the first on stage very first weekend in the Avalon Ballroom.

LEE RITENOUR doing a festival show for the first time with his teenage son Wesley on DRUMS.

Keyboardist JONATHAN FRITZEN  who is right now blazing up the charts with his new radio hit "Friday Night" coming all the way to the Island from Sweden for his JazzTrax Debut.

TIM WEISBERG  returning with his unbelievable memories because his instrumental flute tunes of the 70's introduced many of us to contemporary jazz and including his tribute to the late Dan Fogelberg with whom their Gold Album 'Twin Songs of Different Mothers' was one of 1978's biggest selling albums in America.

And as always ... JazzTrax introducing you to artists you've never heard of nor likely seen anywhere before.

A Violinist from Atlanta, BROOKE ALFORD. A new Wayman Tisdale style bassist from Kansas City who Trippin' N' Rhythm Records will debut next year, JULIAN VAUGHN.  After all the JazzTrax Festival gave many their Big Stage Debuts...Jesse Cook, Mindi Abair, Jessy J, Paul Brown and the list goes on and on and on...

This music is too good to be true and did we mention that Live Smooth Jazz just Feels and Sounds  BETTER .....on an ISLAND?

Voted Best Jazz Festival in America maybe because every single weekend night for 3 consecutive weeks after the final BALLROOM performance, there are FREE AFTER PARTIES that cost you nothing to get into.  Full Bars flowing.  Food being served into the wee hours cause Islands do make us hungry....and thirsty. Wait till you see which Stars of Smooth Jazz after seeing them on the Festival Ballroom's Main Stage, suddenly slip into THE M at midnight to jam.  Or The Avalon Grille.  Or our world famous JazzTrax Saturday Night After Party On the Beach at Descanso.  Full Beach Bar and Food and DJ Jonathan Phillips spinning the dance tunes while the Waves Roll In

Sure you can DayTrip over for just the afternoon or evening with Saturday and Sunday Night Late Boats back to Long Beach round 11:30 p.m. On Catalina Express, but most wouldn't miss a moment from Friday to Monday Morning and now a 1,000 of you are coming early......arriving Thursdays for our brand new Pre Opening Nights Unplugged Under the Stars at Descanso Beach.

Best Jazz Festival in America maybe because a full day before each weekend we've got Mindi Abair and then Lee Ritenour and then Norman Brown OUTDOORS .....UNPLUGGED UNDER THE STARS.....just after dark......ON THE BEACH.   With free Thursday Night hotel rooms TO BOOT?

Waking Up Friday Morning......already HERE.

With a full day, before the music begins at 7:30 p.m. In the Ballroom, to relax, explore, dine casually with no rush to a show....while others are still travelling to get HERE.   You're already here.  Maybe Friday Morning Breakfast right on the Harbor at Antonio's.   Maybe 9 holes of golf with no rush to get done.  Maybe lunch in the Catalina Country Club Pub or tennis for a few hours at Hamilton Cove.  A late afternoon nap or jog along the beach.  Then  all rested up, walking down the Ocean-Front Boardwalk to the Avalon Ballroom way up inside the Wrigley Casino.  While the boats are packed with incoming Friday festival goer's you'll have already been here a full day with a chance to do "other" things beyond just the festival.   Zip Line.  Scuba or Snorkel in the pacific ocean.  Underwater Submarine.  Inner Island Tour.  And if you picked one of the participating hotels even though you arrived on Thursday you don't start paying for your room until Friday Night.

SEE THE LIST of Avalon Hotels and Rental Agencies offering FREE THURSDAY NIGHT ROOMS.  Or stay till Tuesday and go see a movie Monday Night in the fabulous Wrigley Casino Theater that sits just underneath the Avalon Ballroom.  You will not BELIEVE this 1929 movie theater.

VOTED BEST JAZZ FESTIVAL IN AMERICA with a THOUSAND FESTIVAL GOERS THIS FALL arriving on THURSDAYS.

Just walk up the Boardwalk.  You'll figure it out.

Almost Here.   All begins in Just 3 Weeks.....and goes for 3 weeks.

Don't Miss the Boat.

Dont' EVER wait another year to experience the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival.  In All the World No Place Like This for Jazz.   You'll soon see......again.....for the 25th OCTOBER!
